About the Band

Harlequin is a  five piece medieval band from Tasmania, which play music from the 12th to the 16th Century. Harlequin covers a vide range of medieval styles, from religious “cantigas” to secular tunes from the troubadours. Its selection of music spans from Spain to Italy, making the repertoire very diverse and colourful, with energetic tunes, vocals, percussion, dance and much more. Always dressed in medieval gowns, Harlequin take its audience back in time, with instruments from the middle-age era, such as the Hurdy-gurdy, Bass Moraharpa ( keyed fiddle ), Symphony (medieval HurdyGurdy) Citole,Ud, Shawm and Vielle ( medieval fiddle ) most made by members of the band, Graeme McCormack and Harry Wass. The music performed is the result of centuries of influence from all around Europe and North Africa, which implies a beautiful assortment of sounds and dynamics in space as well as in time.
